Presentation
In 1997 ILGA-Portugal held the 1st Gay and Lesbian Film Festival here in Lisbon. The classic model of the retrospective was chosen in a successful attempt to attract the public. This first festival was, generally speaking, a cycle of gay and lesbian films.
The 2nd Lisbon Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, held in 1998, was organized more in line with a festival as such, being much more experimental in character, and primarily aimed at divulging films on a gay or lesbian theme. Public response was only fair.
The 3rd Lisbon Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, held in 1999, is based on an entirely different philosophy.. The exhibited films were, general speaking, recent, usually made in the last 2/3 years, and many are on the trade circuit. It is designed to show current trends (2nd half of the nineties) in films with a gay and lesbian theme, to highlight humour and avoid laying blame at the door of sexuality as was previously seen. Part of the films will be sub-titled in Portuguese to give greater public appeal.
The 4th festival will cover a three week period, from September 8th to 30th, with 49 full length films (>30min) and a group of short filmes and documentaries will be shown, in a total de 78 presentations making more than 88 hours.
It is hoped that a number of directors and actors/actresses will attend various sessions.
